It is an island of volcanic origins and the biggest of the bay. It has six villages and about 30.000 inhabitants.

The main centre of the island is the village of Ischia where there is the famous Aragonese castle. The archaeological museum of Pithecusae in the village of Lacco Ameno has an interesting collection of finds of the Greek time. The island of Ischia was the first Greek settlement in the area of the Tyrrhenian sea.
