Ercolano Archaeological site. According to the legend, Ercolano was founded by the mythical Ercules. The eruption of Vesuvius of 79 a.C., buried the city under lava flows. Mount Vesuvio has erupted several times: the most famous eruption was that of 79 aC that buried the cities of Pompei and Ercolano under lava flows. Many of the archaeological reperts are now exposed at the Archaeological National Museum of Neaples.
